Question 3.
Lucent Technologies designs and delivers the systems, services and software that drive next-generation communications networks at: http://www.lucent.com
I visited http://www.lucent.com which is now redirected to http://www.alcatel-lucent.com/wps/portal.
On the About page of the web site it says the following:
"Alcatel-Lucent is the trusted partner of service providers, enterprises and governments worldwide, providing solutions to deliver voice, data and video communication services to end-users."
"A leader in fixed, mobile and converged broadband networking, IP technologies, applications and services, Alcatel-Lucent leverages the unrivalled technical and scientific expertise of Bell Labs, one of the largest innovation powerhouses in the communications industry."
According to the web site, Alcatel-Lucent uses the following open standards and technologies to enable its next generation communications systems:
BREW (Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless)
This is a solution for downloading small applications and content to CDMA (Code-Division Multiple Access) phones. This includes expense tracking software, games, interactive map tools, graphics and ringtones.
IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem)
This is a general-purpose, open industry standard for voice and multimedia communications over packet-based IP networks. Intended to replace all current circuit-based technologies it provides voice over IP (VoIP), push-to-talk (PTT), push-to-view (PTV), video calling and sharing.
Java 2 Micro Edition (J2ME)
This allows devices to run small, user-installable software applications written especially for mobile clients.
Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS)
This enables the extending of text messaging to encompass longer text, audio clips, graphics, photos, and video clips directly to MMS capable handsets.
Parlay
This is an evolving set of specifications for industry-standard application programming interfaces (APIs) for supervising network "edge" services such as call control, messaging, and content-based charging.
Short Message Service (SMS)
This allows users to send and/or receive short text messages.
Symbian OS
This is an operating system that enables smart phones to make use of next generation network capabilities. It includes onboard calendaring, contact management, messaging, push e-mail and web browsing.
VXML (VoiceXML)
This is an XML-based international standard markup language for making content accessible via voice and phone.
XML (Extensible Markup Language)
This is the way to create common information formats and share both the format and the data on the Web, intranets and elsewhere.
